Anambra Guber: Ohanaeze, monarchs endorse North for second tenure..read more!!!

Awka—THE Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, and other stakeholders in Anambra State yesterday came out strongly in support of the North senatorial zone to produce the next governor of the state to ensure equity and fair play in the politics of the state.

Anambra State president of Ohanaeze, Chief Damian Okeke, at a news conference attended by many traditional rulers from the three senatorial zones of the state, as well as town union presidents, argued that since the North was currently occupying the position, it should be allowed to do another four years to complete its eight years uninterrupted tenure as recommended by the Anambra stakeholders during a recent meeting.

Okeke urged all the political parties contesting the  November 18, 2017  election to embrace the zoning initiative by choosing their candidates for the election from Anambra North senatorial zone. Okeke said: “We interfaced with traditional rulers, presidents’ general of town unions and members of their respective excos and other stakeholders at the senatorial district levels and the traditional rulers, during which the Obi of Onitsha and chairman of the state Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe presided.

“We also consulted the women wing of the town unions, youth leaders and elder statesmen, including former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and first civilian governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife. “After these painstaking consultations, we are happy to announce that the aggregate opinions prescribed that for us to enthrone a stable polity, reduce rancor, mutual suspicion, reduce cost of campaigns for elective political offices and begin to enjoy good governance, we must adopt a zoning formula for critical elective and appointive offices.”

“It was recommended that the governorship seat should be occupied on rotational zonal basis and every zone occupying the seat should be allowed to retain it for eight consecutive years before it should rotate to the next senatorial zone. “It was also recommended that during each tenure, the offices of the governor, deputy governor and speaker of the House of Assembly should be distributed among the three senatorial districts.
